After Your First Competition: Reflection & Next Steps

Your first competition gives you more than a result. It shows how your dancing, preparation, and partnership work in a new setting. Take time to enjoy what you accomplished before deciding what to change.

Start with what worked

Talk with your partner about the moments that felt confident. You may have recovered from a mistake, kept time with unfamiliar music, handled crowded floor space, or simply managed a full day of entries. Those are useful signs of progress.

Results can be part of the conversation, but they do not replace a review of what actually happened in your dancing. Ask your coaches to help you identify practical next steps from video or their observations when available.

Review the experience together

  • Dancing: Where did timing, balance, connection, or floorcraft become difficult?
  • Routines: Which sequences stayed reliable, and where did you need a recovery figure?
  • Partnership: What helped you communicate and support each other?
  • Preparation: Did practice reflect the pace of the event?
  • Logistics: Did arrival, packing, meals, shoes, and clothing work as planned?
  • Enjoyment: What would you like to do again?

Use video with a purpose

If you have a recording, watch it once to understand the whole dance, then choose a specific question for your coaches. For example: “Where did we lose time?” or “How could we have handled that blocked path?” Avoid trying to fix every detail from one viewing.

Ask before recording other dancers and respect the organizer’s filming rules. When sharing your own video for feedback, check that your partner is comfortable with the sharing plan.

Choose two practice priorities

Turn each priority into something you can work on. “Improve timing” becomes more useful when paired with a short exercise your coaches recommend and a plan to test it in a full dance.

A simple reflection:
  • One thing we are proud of: ______
  • One moment we want help understanding: ______
  • Our next two practice priorities: ______
  • One change to our preparation or packing: ______

Decide what comes next

You might enter another competition, return to class with a clearer goal, or spend more time practicing the same dances. Talk with your coaches before changing levels or adding a large set of new entries. Choose the next step based on readiness, time, budget, and what you enjoy.

Keep your notes somewhere you and your partner can revisit. A short review after the next few practices will show whether your plan is helping.
